Watch the temple burn

Burning Man

{0 Comments}

This 60,000 (and growing) arts and music festival takes places annually in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, and it’s certainly not for everyone. Weather conditions are extreme – scorching days, chilly nights – plus you can’t buy anything save water and ice. It is, however, a jaw-dropping, week-long expression of community spirit, creative vision, self-expression, and self-reliance. No commercial sponsors, no advertising, nobody trying to sell you anything other than peace, love, and a raucously good time. Burners from around the world know that a pilgrimage to Black Rock City is a powerful and profound bucket list experience.

Length of Trip : 4 - 7 days

Cost :
The entrance ticket is currently $390 per person, plus $80 for a vehicle pass. Factor in the rental of an RV, bringing all your own food and drink, costumes, art, and getting to Black Rock City. I spent close to $1000 when all was said and done.

Best time to go : The event takes place on the Labour Day long weekend, typically the end of August/first week of September.

Wheelchair friendly : Yes, although it won't be easy. Plan accordingly for desert conditions.

Family friendly : Yes. There's a bustling Kids Camp where kids have the time of their lives. Kids under 12 are free.

Where to eat :
Bring everything you'll want to eat. There are no restaurants, and no grocery stores. Think of it as a camping trip. Everyone you meet is incredibly generous, and in the spirit of the event, bring extra food for those who might need it.

Official Site :
http://burningman.org is a vast resource of information for planning your journey.

Where to Stay :
You don't need an RV, but it makes a world of difference. It helps with warmth and comfort and night, and if you budget your gas accordingly, with much-needed air conditioning during the day. RV's book up many months in advance, so the longer you can plan ahead the better.

Getting There :
Here you'll find directions and advice to arrive from all directions. It all leads to a rural two-lane highway that chokes up for many hours. It's all part of the experience.

Note from Robin :
You'll definitely want to read the First Timer's Guide. Burning Man may sound intimidating, but like any camping trip, all it takes is planning. Respect the rules when it comes to costumes, art, people, and leaving no trace. This is a very much a festival where what you put in, you'll get out. Participate. Join a camp or art project. Be open to talk to those around you. Attend the workshops. And please, party responsibly.
