Pulpit Rock

Say a Prayer in Norway

{0 Comments}

Towering above the north side of Lyefjord is a 25mx25m rock called, Preikestolen, or the Pulpit. With a table-flat surface, crowds gather for the exceptional views, and occasionally, to see how close to the edge their nerves can handle. It’s a decent hike from the parking lot to get there, but as you gaze along the fjord and the surrounding mountains, one can’t help but feel you’ve landed in the quintessential Nordic postcard.

Getting There :
Stavangar is serviced by several European airlines. Your visit will likely be part of a great Norwegian road trip (as well it should!)

Directions from Stavangar: Drive to Lauvvik via Rv 13 National Tourist Route Ryfylke. Take the short ferry to Oanes and continue along Rv 13 where you'll see signs to Preikestolen. Alternatively take the ferry from Stavanger to Tau (40 minutes) and drive south on Rv 13 until you see the signs. Park in the parking lot (which fills up in summer) and it's a 3-4 hour round trip hike to the rock. The elevation can make it pretty strenuous, and it can get cold and slippery.

Note from Robin :
It's a fairly decent hike to this roadside attraction, so make sure you're appropriately attired, and wear layers in case it gets chilly. It's 3.8km each way, and the trail is well marked. Bring a packed lunch to enjoy on the rock. Unlike some viewpoints that are barricaded with liability, there's only been one reported fatality attributed to an accident, and a few suicides. Your innate fear of death should keep you from the edge, but take care all the same.
