Lisbon’s Blindfolded Tour
Conceived by a creative design company called Cabracega, in collaboration with an operator called Lisbon Walker, this walking tour blindfolds participates for a sensory discovery of Alfama, Lisbon’s labyrinthine old town. The goal is to open up your senses and experience a world without sight, while learning about the practicalities and challenges of the blind in a positive environment. Cabracega was inspired by the so-called dark restaurants that have sprung up around the world, where diners eat in pure darkness often served by blind waiters. Getting There :
Here's a fun way to explore Lisbon. The Go Car is a small, yellow three-wheeler that lets you take the handlebars of your sightseeing. Guided by a cleverly voiced GPS (male riders receive a sexy female voice, ladies a charming male voice, couples just get to argue about directions), your 2-stroke Go Car growls to a top speed of 50 km/hr, rush hour traffic be damned. Take in the beautiful sights of Lisbon at my your pace – Belem Tower, the Jeronimos Monastery, Commerce Square. Rent by the hour or the day, and don’t forget to laugh.
Note from Robin :
The Sensorial Tour was the longest I’d ever been awake, aware and concentrating on a changing sensory landscape, all the while with my eyes closed. With newfound respect for the visually impaired, and knowledge about an interesting part of the Lisbon, perhaps it’s time for other Blind Associations to take note. Every city should have a blindfolded walking tour. As a participant, it has to be unseen to be believed.
