Genealogy in Lithuania
Most genealogists advise to start with what you know. I knew my grandfather was born in a small town in northern Lithuania called Kupiskis. With the help of Google, I found a wealth of knowledge about this former shtetl conveniently gathered from around the world. Before World War II, 41% of its population were Jews, all of whom were rounded up to be brutally murdered by local Nazi collaborators. I knew from the start that there was no chance of physically discovering a forgotten branch of my family tree, yet visiting the village where my grandfather was born would help me understand where I came from. For those who wish to follow in my footsteps, the following information might prove useful.

Note from Robin : There are thousands of volunteer genealogical societies worldwide who can help you start your search. Websites like Cyndis List (www.cyndislist.com) contain thousands of links to get you started. Talk to the people you know before going to online state archives, census records, obituaries, newspaper clippings and other sources of information. It is highly likely you’ll soon encounter a relative or enthusiast on the same path, eager to share and learn from you. Remember, when publishing personal information on websites and databases to respect others privacy. Most of all, have fun determining your six degrees to Kevin Bacon!
